Archway sits on the Islington and Camden border, which means two councils, two sets of admissions rules and two ways of measuring the same distance. This guide sets out the best schools to buy or rent near in N19, the published cut-off distances, the streets inside them and what those streets cost.
Neither borough uses catchment areas for primary schools. Places go to the children who live closest, but Camden measures in a straight line to the centre of the school and Islington to the midpoint of the school grounds, and each publishes its figures in a different place. For September 2025, Yerbury admitted to 0.277 miles and Ashmount to 1.284, according to Islington's Find Your Islington directory, while Camden's Brookfield, just over the border on Chester Road, reached 0.883 miles, per Camden Council.
Rochester Place has sold and let homes across Archway, Tufnell Park and Upper Holloway since 2004. Reece Kendall-Georgiou, our Senior Lettings Negotiator, has lived in Islington his whole life and has advised families moving here since 2018. The ten primary schools below are the ones buyers and tenants ask about most.
Key points: schools in Archway in 2026
- Archway straddles two boroughs. Islington schools follow the Islington admissions scheme; Camden schools follow the Starting School in Camden guide. Both allocate by straight-line distance after priority groups.
- Islington reports 95% of its primary schools as good or outstanding, and Camden reports good or outstanding outcomes at all 38 of its own.
- Several Archway schools admitted every distance applicant in 2025. Duncombe and Hungerford both show "does not apply" against the distance criterion, meaning no applicant was turned away on distance.
- Average house prices in June 2026 (provisional) were £673,000 in Islington and £833,000 in Camden, with Islington flats averaging £560,000, per the ONS and HM Land Registry. Archway is among the more affordable parts of either borough.
- Applications for September 2027 close on 15 January 2027 in both boroughs, with offers on 16 April 2027.
- Secondary places follow a separate cycle. Year 7 applications close on 31 October 2026. City of London Academy Highgate Hill, St Aloysius' College and Camden's Parliament Hill and Acland Burghley are all within reach.
Is Archway a good place to buy a home with a family?
Yes, and Archway is the best-value entry point in this series. It combines schools from two boroughs on one application, the Northern line in zone 2 and 3, Whittington Park and Waterlow Park, and Hampstead Heath a short bus ride west. The trade-off is that Archway has historically been overlooked next to Highgate and Dartmouth Park, which is precisely why the June 2026 Islington borough average of £673,000 sits below Camden's £833,000 and why family houses here still come to market at prices that have left the streets over the hill.
For a family deciding where in London to buy, the practical test is this: can you afford a home inside the cut-off distance of a primary school you like, within walking distance of a secondary you would accept, on a street you would still want to live on once the children have left? Archway passes that test at a lower price than anywhere else in this series, and the two-borough application is a genuine advantage rather than a complication. The sections below show which streets.
Why do families move to Archway for the schools?
Families move here for Victorian terraces at prices that undercut Highgate and Dartmouth Park, a Northern line station with two branches, and green space in three directions: Whittington Park, Waterlow Park and Highgate Woods to the north, Hampstead Heath to the west. The Archway gyratory has been reworked into a public square, and Junction Road and Holloway Road carry the day-to-day shops.
The trade-off is that the picture is split across two councils, and Islington does not publish application numbers per school the way Camden does. That makes the published cut-off distance the most useful single number, and it is why this guide leads with it.
How do Islington and Camden decide who gets a primary school place?
Islington community schools offer places after EHC plans in priority order, with distance as the deciding criterion for most applicants, measured in a straight line from the home address as defined by the Land and Property Gazetteer to the midpoint of the school grounds. Where two children are equidistant and one place remains, the council uses random allocation. Islington publishes each school's cut-off on its Find Your Islington directory, which also carries a home-to-school distance calculator.
Camden community schools use a similar sequence but measure to the centre of the school. Voluntary aided church schools in both boroughs set their own criteria and need a supplementary form sent to the school. You apply once, through the borough you live in, naming up to six schools in any borough, at eadmissions.org.uk. Neither council gives its own residents priority: the Greenwich Judgement prevents it.
Top 10 primary schools in Archway to buy or rent near: the ranking
How this ranking works: Islington reports 95% of its primaries as good or outstanding and Camden reports good or outstanding at all 38 of its own, so the grade does not separate them. Schools are ranked on how hard they are to get into, using the published cut-off distance for September 2025, with Camden's applications-per-place figures where the school is a Camden one. Where Islington's directory published no distance figure when we checked, the school is listed on location at the end rather than ranked, and that is stated.
- Eleanor Palmer (Camden): 224 applications for 30 places, cut-off 0.124 miles. The tightest reach of any school near Archway.
- Yerbury (Islington): last distance admitted 0.277 miles for September 2025.
- Brookfield (Camden): 155 for 60 (2.6 per place), 0.883 miles, on the Dartmouth Park Hill side.
- Ashmount (Islington): 1.284 miles, at the Crouch Hill end.
- Hargrave Park (Islington): no 2025 distance published in the directory; listed on location.
- St John's Upper Holloway CE (Islington): faith criteria; no 2025 distance published.
- Whitehall Park (Islington): no 2025 distance published.
- Grafton (Islington): no 2025 distance published.
- Duncombe (Islington): distance criterion did not apply in September 2025; all applicants admitted.
- Hungerford (Islington): distance criterion did not apply; all applicants admitted.
Top 10 primary schools in Archway: 2025 admissions data
Islington figures are the "last pupil admitted under distance criterion in September 2025" published on each school's Find Your Islington entry. Camden figures are from the results table in Starting School in Camden 2026, showing April 2025 with April 2024 in brackets. "Does not apply" means no applicant was refused on distance. "Not published" means the directory entry showed no figure when checked on 13 September 2026; use the council's distance calculator for the current position.

1. Eleanor Palmer Primary School, Lupton Street NW5 2JA
Best for: families who can buy at the very southern edge of Archway.
Eleanor Palmer is the most oversubscribed primary within reach of Archway and by some way the hardest to get into: 224 applications for 30 places in 2025, with the last child offered living 0.124 miles away, roughly 200 metres. Almost no Archway address falls inside that, so treat it as a school for the Tufnell Park end rather than a realistic Archway option. If it is the goal, look at houses for sale in Tufnell Park rather than N19 proper.
Streets in reach: Lupton Street, the nearer ends of Lady Margaret Road and Falkland Road, and the Burghley Road terraces.
2. Yerbury Primary School, Foxham Road N19 4RR
Best for: the Yerbury and Corinne Road grid south of Archway.
Yerbury is the most sought-after Islington primary within reach of Archway, with a September 2025 cut-off of 0.277 miles. Foxham Road, Yerbury Road, Corinne Road, Hugo Road, Dalmeny Road and the Mercers Road end of Tufnell Park Road are inside it, a grid of Victorian terraces with unusually generous gardens for zone 2. It runs an after-school club to 6pm. Check the current figure and any specific address on the Find Your Islington calculator before you offer.
Streets in reach: Foxham Road, Yerbury Road, Corinne Road, Hugo Road, Dalmeny Road and Mercers Road.
3. Brookfield Primary School, Chester Road N19 5DH
Best for: the Dartmouth Park Hill side of Archway.
Brookfield is the Camden school on the Archway border, a two-form-entry primary with 60 places, a 39-place nursery and 24 part-time two-year-old places. It received 155 applications in 2025 and admitted to 0.883 miles, having had vacancies in 2024, so the reach is wide but volatile. Chester Road, Dartmouth Park Hill, Raydon Street, Doynton Street and the upper Junction Road side are inside it. Our guide to buying in Dartmouth Park covers the streets just over the hill.
Streets in reach: Chester Road, Dartmouth Park Hill, Raydon Street, Doynton Street, Boscastle Road and upper Junction Road.
4. Ashmount Primary School, Crouch Hill N4 4LR
Best for: buyers who want reach rather than a race.
Ashmount sits on Crouch Hill on the Islington and Haringey border, in a modern building beside Crouch Hill Park. Its September 2025 cut-off of 1.284 miles is the widest of any school in this guide, which makes it the most forgiving geography for an Archway buyer by a considerable margin. Crouch Hill, Hornsey Rise, Sunnyside Road, Ashley Road and the Stroud Green side are comfortably inside it. The school holds tours on the first and last Thursday of each month.
Streets in reach: Crouch Hill, Hornsey Rise, Sunnyside Road, Ashley Road and the Stroud Green streets.
5. Hargrave Park School, 51 Bredgar Road N19 5BS
Best for: the Hargrave Park and Whittington Park streets.
Hargrave Park is the Islington community school closest to Archway station, just off Dartmouth Park Hill with 341 children on roll. Bredgar Road, Hargrave Park, Hargrave Road, Bickerton Road and the Dartmouth Park Hill flats are the nearest addresses, a short walk from Whittington Park. Its directory entry did not show a September 2025 distance cut-off when we checked, so it is listed on location rather than ranked; the Find Your Islington calculator will give you the current position for any address.
Streets in reach: Bredgar Road, Hargrave Park, Hargrave Road, Bickerton Road and Dartmouth Park Hill.
6. St John's Upper Holloway CE Primary School, Pemberton Gardens N19 5RR
Best for: Church of England families at the Archway end.
A voluntary aided Church of England school off Junction Road, a few minutes from Archway station. Faith criteria take priority and a supplementary form goes to the school directly. Pemberton Gardens, Junction Road, St John's Way, St John's Grove and the Holloway Road side are the nearest streets. The directory entry showed no September 2025 distance when we checked, so it is listed on location; confirm on Find Your Islington.
Streets in reach: Pemberton Gardens, Junction Road, St John's Way, St John's Grove and Bickerton Road.
7. Whitehall Park School, N19
Best for: the Whitehall Park and Hornsey Lane streets.
Whitehall Park is an Islington school on the hill between Archway and Highgate, in the conservation area of the same name. Whitehall Park, Hornsey Lane, Cheverton Road, Gladsmuir Road and Dartmouth Park Hill's upper end are the streets around it. Islington publishes its determined admission arrangements on the council's admissions pages; no September 2025 distance was shown in the directory when we checked, so it is listed on location.
Streets in reach: Whitehall Park, Hornsey Lane, Cheverton Road, Gladsmuir Road and upper Dartmouth Park Hill.
8. Grafton Primary School, Eburne Road N7 6AR
Best for: the Holloway Road side.
Grafton sits between Holloway Road and Seven Sisters Road, serving Eburne Road, Hercules Street, Monnery Road and the streets behind Holloway Road station. It is an Islington community school, so the distance rule applies; no September 2025 cut-off was shown in the directory when we checked. This is the most affordable pocket in this guide, and the flats on the Holloway Road side are where many first-time buyers start. See flats to rent in Archway for the rental side.
Streets in reach: Eburne Road, Hercules Street, Monnery Road, Tollington Way and the Holloway Road side.
9. Duncombe Primary School, N19
Best for: families who want a strong school without a distance race.
Duncombe is an Islington community school in Upper Holloway. Its directory entry records that the distance criterion does not apply for September 2025, meaning every applicant who reached that stage was offered a place. That makes it one of the two most accessible schools in this guide. The school runs Tuesday morning tours through the autumn term. Confirm the current position on Find Your Islington before you plan around it, since a single strong year can change it.
Streets in reach: The Upper Holloway streets between Hornsey Road and Holloway Road, including Sussex Way and Andover Road.
10. Hungerford Primary School, Hungerford Road N7 9LF
Best for: the Hillmarton conservation area, and the least competitive strong option.
Hungerford is an academy with 30 reception places, a free breakfast club from 8am and free after-school care to 6pm. Islington's directory records that the distance criterion did not apply for September 2025, meaning every applicant reaching that stage was admitted. Hungerford Road, Hillmarton Road, Freegrove Road, Cardozo Road and Lowther Road are the streets around it, an area of substantial mid-Victorian villas where Rochester Place has sold and let regularly. Rochester Place sold a two-bedroom flat on Lowther Road at £625,000 here; check the listing for current status.
Streets in reach: Hungerford Road, Hillmarton Road, Freegrove Road, Cardozo Road, Lowther Road and Hartham Road.

Top 10 secondary schools in Archway to buy or rent near
Buying with a child under five means thinking about Year 7 too, because the same house usually has to work for both. Camden runs ten state secondaries and co-ordinates Year 7 admissions; applications for September 2027 close on 31 October 2026, with offers on national offer day in March 2027, per Camden Council. Islington uses the same eadmissions.org.uk system and date. Most community secondaries allocate on distance after priority groups, but several are single-sex, the Catholic and Church schools use faith criteria, and Camden School for Girls admits by ability banding. Sixth forms admit on GCSE grades, not address, so proximity matters for Years 7 to 11 rather than 12 and 13.
How this ranking works: Camden published school-level 2025 GCSE results for two secondaries in its August 2025 results release, and its Achievement and Standards Report records which schools had a graded inspection in 2024/25. Schools are ranked on that published evidence and on how hard they are to get into. Where the council has not published a school-level figure, the entry says so and points to the DfE tables rather than guessing. Camden's borough-wide provisional Attainment 8 for 2025 was 46.8, above the national 45.9 and below London's 50.4, per the Camden Learning Achievement and Standards Report 2024-25. Islington schools without comparable published figures are listed on location, at the end.
| Rank | School | Type | Gender | Year 7 places | Evidence for position |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Camden School for Girls | Voluntary aided | Girls | 120 | Banding; 0.38–0.76 mi for 2026 entry |
| 2 | Parliament Hill | Community | Girls | 180 | 41% of GCSE entries at 9–7 in 2025 |
| 3 | Acland Burghley | Community | Mixed | 182 | 33.5% of GCSE grades at 9–7 in 2025 |

How should you read an Ofsted report in 2026?
Ofsted changed its inspection framework on 10 November 2025, and any school inspected since then no longer receives a single-word grade. Instead it gets a report card grading each area of its work on a five-point scale: exceptional, strong standard, expected standard, needs attention and urgent improvement, with safeguarding judged separately as met or not met. Between September 2024 and November 2025, inspections gave sub-judgements without an overall grade. Before September 2024, schools received the familiar overall effectiveness grade.
The practical consequence is that a school described as "outstanding" may be carrying a grade from an inspection several years old, while a school with a newer report card may look different on paper without being any weaker. Check the inspection date on reports.ofsted.gov.uk, read the framework on GOV.UK if you want the detail, and use Camden School Reports, which the council publishes for all 38 primaries, for a rounder picture.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best primary schools in Archway?
Yerbury has the shortest published reach at 0.277 miles for September 2025, with Brookfield over the Camden border at 0.883 miles and Ashmount at 1.284. Hargrave Park and St John's Upper Holloway are the schools closest to Archway station itself.
Is Archway in Islington or Camden?
Mostly Islington. The Dartmouth Park Hill side crosses into Camden, where Brookfield sits. Check any specific address on the council websites, because the two boroughs measure distance differently.
Do Archway schools have catchment areas?
No. Both boroughs allocate community school places by straight-line distance after priority groups. Islington measures to the midpoint of the school grounds; Camden to the centre of the school.
Which Archway primary school is easiest to get into?
Duncombe and Hungerford both show the distance criterion as not applying for September 2025, meaning every applicant reaching that stage was offered a place. Ashmount reached 1.284 miles.
How close do I need to live to Yerbury?
The last pupil admitted under the distance criterion for September 2025 lived 0.277 miles away, according to Islington's school directory. It is a guide, not a guarantee, and changes each year.
When is the primary school application deadline?
15 January 2027 for September 2027 entry in both Islington and Camden, with offers on 16 April 2027. Apply once, through the borough you live in, naming up to six schools.
Can I apply to schools in both boroughs?
Yes. You submit one application through your home borough and can list schools in any borough. Neither council gives its own residents priority; the Greenwich Judgement prevents it.
Which secondary schools are near Archway?
City of London Academy Highgate Hill is on Highgate Hill and St Aloysius' College (Catholic boys) on Hornsey Lane, with Beacon High on the Holloway side. Camden's Parliament Hill, William Ellis, La Sainte Union and Acland Burghley are all reachable over the hill.
Is Archway a good place to live for families?
Schools from two boroughs on one application, three parks within walking distance, the Northern line, and the lowest first-time buyer average in this series make it the best-value family option covered here.
Where in London should a family buy or rent? Why Rochester Place recommends Archway
If you are asking where in London to buy or rent a home with a family, Archway is the value answer. It is the one area in this series where you can put schools from two boroughs on a single application, reach Whittington Park, Waterlow Park and Hampstead Heath without a car, and still buy below both borough averages. The Islington first-time buyer average of £595,000 is the lowest here, and two local primaries admitted every distance applicant in 2025. For Year 7 there is City of London Academy Highgate Hill on the doorstep and the four LaSWAP schools over the hill.
Rochester Place has sold and let homes here since 2004. Our current sales listings in Archway and rental listings in Archway are the place to start; register your requirements and we will send you homes inside the radius of the school you want before they reach the portals.
